FPU 131: Wood Structure and Identification
How to Use of this Laboratory Manual
In order to properly use this laboratory exercises manual, one must have a basic knowledge
in Botany, Taxonomy, Morphology and Dendrology as this subjects are all interdependence to
each other. Wood identification can be honed through constant familiarization on the types of pore,
rays, rings, parenchyma and other inclusions. The author made some of the most basic way in
identifying the wood samples in term of anatomical and physical features in order for the reader

After identifying wood sample, the scientific name is an indispensable part as a final label.
Scientific name are governed by a botanical code of nomenclature the International Code of
Botanic Nomenclature (ICBN) as used in the Binomial nomenclature-system of naming in
taxonomy, which gives both the genus and the species there are 2 parts, the first is generic name

Pinus-is the genus, insularis-the species.
The nomenclature or naming has three type of names for a species (1) Local name-known
only in the region or locality (ALOCON) (2) Official common name-country (HIMBABAO)
Scientific name- international name of the plant (Broussonetia luzonica) Common name based on
its chief characteristics. Examples are
