FPU 131: Wood Structure and Identification

Hands-On Exercises 1. Anatomical properties of wood

Purpose: The purpose of this exercise is to familiarize you with basic anatomical and physical
properties of wood (pores, parenchyma, resin canal, color, odor, taste etc) of wood samples.

Learning Outcomes – Upon completion of this exercise you should be able to:
                   - determine type of pore, rays, parenchyma and resin canal of wood samples
                   - identify wood structure using the basic techniques for describing and sampling woods
                   - classify wood samples according to common names, scientific name and family name

Instruction: Cut a horizontal line using the cutter from the cross sectional plane of the wood
sample, using the wood lens (20x) see through it the different anatomical part of the wood. Draw
using pencil in this exercise sheet the part and identify the inclusion of the wood samples

                                                           Tools and equipment needed:
                                                              - Wood lens (20x)
                                                              - Wood sample (3”x4”)
                                                              - Cutter
                                                              - Pencil
                                                              - Yellow pad
