NATIONAL CENTER FOR SUPERCOMPUTING
APPLICATIONS AT UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS
The National Center for Supercomputing Applications project, built for the University of Illinois, included the
new construction of 142,000 square foot of computer labs, faculty offices, a 200 seat lecture hall, instructional
labs, and executive conference rooms. The facility supports over 400 NCSA employees, houses the NCSA
Petascale Computing Facility, and serves as the anchor for the new information technology quadrangle on the
University of Illinois, Urbana campus. The facility was constructed using block structural framing and a brick
finish. The project also featured a 24-megawatt electrical capacity, 5,400 tons of water cooling capacity from
the university’s chilled water distribution loop, and three on-site cooling towers to provide naturally chilled
water from the outside air. The new National Center for Supercomputer Applications project provided an
environment for researchers and scientists to further their empirical goals.
