How to use this manual

This manual was intended to be printed out and carried on duty by a field training officer to be
referenced while training a recruit officer or saved on a phone as a pdf flip book. Due to its thinness, it
easily fits in a small folder and can be stored between the passenger’s seat and center console when not
being used. It’s meant to be used as a quick reference for FTOs to help them engage in productive
training discussions during slow moments on the shift while riding around in the patrol vehicle.

There is a section in this manual that has scenarios that involve various offenses. Because this was put
together for our agency, it only uses Argyle addresses. However, it is recommended that you substitute
the Argyle addresses for addresses within your jurisdiction. The reason we used different locations for
each scenario is to expose recruit officers to various locations within their jurisdiction and
simultaneously improve their geography knowledge while reviewing the scenarios. Each scenario has
FTO talking points on the second page. Those are also intended to help the FTO engage the recruit
officer in a discussion about the scenario. The way we commonly use these scenarios is to read them out
loud to the recruit and have them verbalize their actions and then a possible narrative. This should also
help recruits improve their report writing skills.
