Primary FTO responsibilities
1. Provide the best training possible for the recruit
2. Evaluate the recruit’s performance as fairly and objectively as possible
3. You are the recruit supervisor. Ensure the recruit abides by the rules and regulations of the
department. Counsel the recruit when necessary.
4. Be an appropriate role model, demonstrate the attributes of integrity and professionalism in all
activities.

Training is not a passive activity
Look for training opportunities
Create training opportunities even if through simulations, verbal testing, verbal review, etc.
It’s the FTO’s responsibility to find creative training opportunities
Do not forget that we have a limited amount of training time
Five ways to Squelch motivation (DO NOT DO THIS)
• Make recruits feel stupid for asking questions
• Be quick to criticize
• Assume the trainee will apply what is taught
• Get recruits in a passive mood and keep them there
• Have little contact (silence)
1. Silence is interpreted as “they don’t understand”
2. Silences is interpreted as “they aren’t listening”
3. Silence is interpreted as “they don’t care”
4. Often viewed as anger
5. Reduces confidence
6. Decreases performance
7. Creates paranoia
