MPD celebrates
National Police Week
Sunday, May 10 - Saturday May 16, 2020
Due to COVID-19, the annual Nationa l Pol ice Week
celebrations in Washington D.C. were canc eled. How eve r,
the Milwaukee Police Department saw this as an
opportunity to organize events across the city.
For the first time, MPD held a candl elight vi gil in
McArthur Square to honor fallen law enf orcement
officers. In unison with law enforcement age nc ies across
the country, a bagpiper accompanied by membe rs of the
Honor Guard gathered at midnight on May 13, 2020 to
perform Taps.
Remembering Officer Matthew Rittner
Milwaukee Police Officer, Matthew Rittner was ki lled
in the line of duty while serving a search warrant on
February 6 of 2019.
This year, his name was added to the Nationa l Law
Enforcement Memorial Wall of Honor in Washi ngt on
D.C. as well as the Law Enforcement Memor ial in
Madison, Wisconsin.
Officer Rittner began his law enforcement career with
the Milwaukee Police Department as a Pol ice Aide in
December of 2001. Shortly after gradua ting from the
academy, Officer Rittner was assigned to District Four
and later became a member of the Tactical
Enforcement Unit. Although we were una bl e to
celebrate Officer Rittner in Washingt on D.C., we
celebrate him in our hearts, where he will always be .
