Artistic extremes
Okay, so you’ve made some mistakes (or happy accidents, if
you’d rather), where do you go from there? One option is to
lean into those mistakes, or any other aspect of your art.
Ever drawn a person and the eyes looked kind of odd? May-
be the teeth? Or painted a landscape and felt like the forest
was a bit wonky compared to the rest of it? That’s a perfect
opportunity for you to exaggerate and amplify those ele-
ments.
I’ve personally found that when I make art, I don’t like most
aspects of it to be in the middle, so to speak. Either fully clean
or fully messy, lines that are completely straight or complete-
ly jagged, shapes that are completely perfect or completely
imperfect. Of course, a contrast in the piece as a whole can
work well too, mixing perfect and imperfect, just remember to
be intentional. Each element should have a purpose.
Taking individual elements from things that inspire you
This one’s pretty simple: If there’s something that inspires you,
absolutely create something influenced by it, but try not to
copy everything from it. Be transformative with your work as
often as you can.
Recurring elements
Got a favorite animal? An original character you’ve come
up with? A favorite color scheme, time period, or concept?
