Making a “stream of consciousness” piece

Make a piece in the medium of your choice without thinking
about it. Go through the motions, letting your natural impuls-

es take you where they want to go. Some artists base their

whole style off of these kinds of pieces, some find it to be a

helpful exercise, some just resort to it when they’re stuck. How-
ever you choose to look at it, relaxing and letting whatever

comes to mind take the wheel will certainly get you interest-

ing results.

The bottom line

Making original, stand-out art that represents who you are has
a lot to do with self-perception. Any of the ideas mentioned

above can be a good place to start for exploring, but at the

end of the day whether or not you have made good art is up

to how you look at it. Art is subjective after all.

Your style may change some, it may change a lot. What’s

important is how you view it yourself. Not anybody else. Make
what’s cool to you, not just what’s technically “good” art. Ex-

periment, explore, and always be learning.
