UAE Launches Reading Ambassadors Initiative to
Mark National Reading Month 2025
The Gulf Observer News March 31, 2025
Abu Dhabi, The Gulf Observer: To conclude National Reading Month 2025, the Ministry of Culture (MOC), in collaboration with the Supreme Council
for Motherhood and Childhood and the Federal Youth Authority, has launched the Reading Ambassadors Initiative. This initiative aims to foster a
culture of reading by appointing influential figures as mentors and literacy advocates, empowering communities to make reading a daily habit.
The inaugural edition of the initiative features Reading Ambassadors selected across four main categories: writers and pioneers, youth, volunteers,
and children. These ambassadors will play a vital role in launching impactful initiatives, promoting best practices, and inspiring a lifelong commitment
to reading. They will also propose and implement innovative projects at MOC-affiliated libraries and cultural centers.
The Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood aligns this initiative with Emirati Children’s Day 2025, themed ‘The Right to Identity and
National Culture.’ The theme emphasizes strengthening national identity among children and youth, enhancing their proficiency in the Arabic
language, and preserving the UAE’s cultural heritage, including poetry, proverbs, and traditional arts.
Mubarak Al Nakhi, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Culture, reaffirmed MOC’s commitment to sustainable reading initiatives, emphasizing that
reading is fundamental to knowledge acquisition, scientific advancement, and national progress. He underscored the shared responsibility of
institutions and communities in fostering a reading culture.
The ministry, along with its partners, will support the Reading Ambassadors by providing platforms within Cultural Centres and libraries for them to
present their projects and share experiences. Additionally, an annual forum will be held to celebrate the achievements of the ambassadors.
The initiative’s distinguished ambassadors in the Writers and Pioneers category include Sheikha Dr. Shamma bint Mohammed bin Khalid Al Nahyan,
Dr. Sultan Al Ameemi, Asma Seddiq Al Mutawaa, Dr. Aisha Belkhair, Fahad Al Memari, Maitha Al Khayat, and Mohammed Al Hebsi.
The Volunteer category includes Hashem Al Wali and Fatima Al Hammadi, while the Youth category features members of various UAE Youth Councils
and past champions of the UAE Arab Reading Challenge. The Children’s category comprises several members of the Emirati Children’s Parliament.
Sheikha Dr. Shamma bint Mohammed bin Khalid Al Nahyan expressed her honor in participating in the initiative, highlighting the transformative
power of reading and the importance of critical and interactive engagement with literature. Dr. Sultan Al Ameemi emphasized reading as a
foundational pillar for cultivating knowledgeable individuals in a rapidly evolving world.
With this initiative, the UAE reaffirms its dedication to literacy and knowledge as key drivers of cultural and intellectual development, ensuring that
reading remains an integral part of society’s progress.
