Did you know?
Hike around Broadway Tower, a folly on the escarpment above picturesque Broadway, and you get
the best views in the Cotswolds. Then visit the monument for its sheer eccentricity. Designed by
Capability Brown and completed in 1798, the tower became a holiday home of William Morris.
Where to stay
Barnsley House, an ultra-chic and immensely relaxing retreat for grown-ups, set in a picturesque
village of the same name. It offers contemporary rooms, good food and a glorious spa, but best of
all is its famous garden, a seminal creation of the property's late owner Rosemary Verey. Read the
full review here.
Devon
Craggy coves and cream teas, surf breaks and strolls, farm shops and pints in pub gardens – a
holiday in Devon mixes two of life’s loveliest pleasures: good food and the great outdoors. Most
people are drawn to the surf beaches (Woolacombe, Croyde Bay and Saunton Sands) on the north
coast or the ‘English Riviera’ (Torquay, Paingnton and Brixham) on the south coast – it pays to
visit these out of season. Inland, Dartmoor is also a beautiful spot, with hiking, wild swimming,
solitude and big skies.

Lesser-known spots
Between Dartmoor and Exmoor, it's a gentler landscape of meandering rivers, oak tree woodlands
and Friesian-filled pastures hiding clusters of thatched villages such as Bickleigh and Thorverton
