Essentially, anywhere with no connection to William Wordsworth or Beatrix Potter. Instead, take a
leisurely cycle down country lanes on the Grasmere Trail or go mountain biking in Grizedale and
Whinlatter forests. Go cold water swimming in a glacial lake or tarn (beginners could try
Derwentwater, Blea Tarn or Coniston Water) or take a gentle hike on Loughrigg Fell or Castle
Crag. And yes, you really can experience four seasons in a day, so be prepared.
Did you know?
There’s only one official lake in the Lake District (Bassenthwaite Lake), all the rest are meres or
waters.
Where to stay
Gilpin Hotel & Lake House is firmly in the indulgent break category, with private hot tubs and
saunas, Michelin-starred dining and legions of staff. Opt for one of the slick glass-and-wood stand-
alone lodges for ultimate privacy. It’s the epitome of a modern country house hotel pimped up with
a dash of bling. Read the full review here.
Norfolk
The North Norfolk coast between Hunstanton and Cromer is a stunning coastline of tidal marshes
and golden beaches, famous for the seals at Blakeney Point and crabs in Cromer (you only eat the
latter). Further south, its navigable rivers and lakes form the Norfolk Broads, one of England’s 10
designated national parks, and one of the most important wetlands in Europe. The medieval city of
Norwich is a springboard for the Broads and might be best known for its football club (Stephen Fry
and Delia Smith are two big-ticket supporters).
