(near Tiverton). Otters can be found in all of Devon’s major rivers, and these days beavers are
thriving (the River Otter in east Devon has a wild breeding population).

        Did you know?

Exeter has the narrowest street in the world – Parliament Street is just two feet wide at its
        slimmest.

        Where to stay

The view from your balcony at Salcombe Harbour Hotel & Spa, a contemporary waterside spa
hotel, winds you down even before anyone has laid so much as a finger on your chakras. And with
a fabulous seafood restaurant, buzzy cocktail bar, rooftop terrace and private cinema, it’s an all-
round crowd pleaser. Read the full review here.

        Lake District

The Lake District National Park has been protected since 1951 and its picturesque patchwork of
lakes, valleys, woodlands and fells – not to mention Scafell Pike, England’s highest mountain –
make it one of the best places in England to get outdoors. At more than 10.5 miles long,
Windermere is the lake that everyone has heard of and it would be impossible to explore properly
without taking a cruise (services from Bowness, Ambleside or Lakeside), or getting out on a kayak
or SUP. Cruises for Ullswater, the second-longest lake, leave from the village of Glenridding.
