Lesser-known spots
Inland, on the Essex and Suffolk border, lies ‘Constable Country’ at Flatford Mill and Dedham
Vale, as well as the nearby half-timbered village of Lavenham. Back on the coast, the shingle spit of
Orford Ness National Nature Reserve (open from Easter to the end of October) can only be
reached by National Trust ferry. It has an eerie feel as it’s littered with abandoned military
buildings, but the birds don’t mind a jot and the habitat is a haven for barn owls and birds of prey.
Did you know?
When the Anglo Saxon buried ship was discovered at Sutton Hoo in Suffolk, it proved that the
‘Dark Ages’ in post Roman Britain didn’t exist.
Where to stay
The Jockey Club Rooms in Newmarket is not just a place to stay but a fascinating insight into the
“sport of kings”. This exclusive, town-centre venue is a private members club which offers
luxurious accommodation and the chance to view first-class equine artwork in an elegant and
historic setting. Breakfast is a real occasion. Read the full review here.
London
Colossal infrastructure projects such as Crossrail and the revitalisation of King’s Cross, new
skyscrapers, even entire new areas, such as the Embassy Quarter and Battersea Power Station
south of the river, are transforming modern-day London, but some things are constant. London
will always have its landmarks like the Tower of London, Big Ben and St Paul’s Cathedral, and
cultural touchpoints like the British Museum, the Royal National Theatre, both Tate galleries and
the South Kensington museums.
