Friday 9:45 - 10:45 Session: S63 PreK - 5th Level Carolina A Room
Using Labels as Building Blocks
The main focus of the presentation will be to show how the workshop model when
framed around learning modalities increases engagement and depth of knowledge
for all students regardless of educational backgrounds, especially those with special
needs. The presentation will demonstrate how to use the mathematical processes as
the foundation when planning activities for the math workshop. It will show how
each standard can have multiple entry points that are identified for the students'
needs and meet the needs of the differing students in an inclusive math class.

From unit rates to linear functions…setting the foundation using the
TI-84 Plus CE graphing calculator
During middle school, students are expected to develop an understanding of proportional
relationships and represent these using verbal descriptions, tables, graphs and equations. This begins
with unit rates and progresses to linear functions in the form y = m*x + b. Making the connection
between unit rate, rate of change, and slope can help build a conceptual understanding of linear
functions. Additionally, understanding what makes a relationship proportional helps students
determine what type of equation models a given situation. Using the TI-84 Plus CE provides a great
opportunity for students to investigate unit rate, proportionality and determine a linear equation that
fits the data. We will take advantage of multiple representations using the graphing, table and list
features of TI 84 Plus CE to help build conceptual understanding.
