What stops us?
I think that the main reasons we avoid these conversations are:
• We don’t know what to say. We worry that we will say it the wrong way
and they will get upset or angry.
• We are worried we might be wrong. So, the other person may disagree or
challenge us, or it turn out that we were wrong and hadn’t got all the
facts.
• We are frightened of the consequences. We avoid the conversation
because we don’t want to feel uncomfortable and we don’t want to make
them feel bad.
These are very strong reasons. And the longer we put it off the harder it
gets. How do you tell someone their behaviour is inappropriate if you have
been letting them get away with it for days, weeks or months?
