leave beyond 30 days will be reviewed on a case by case basis.

Employees are required to utilize their accrued vacation/sick leave concurrently with personal leave
time. Employees may not take leave without pay when they have vacation hours available. If the
personal leave is not for a medical reason, only accrued vacation time must be exhausted prior to taking
               unpaid leave.

               Eligibility
All employees employed by APUS for a minimum of 90 days are eligible to apply for an unpaid
personal leave of absence. Job performance, absenteeism and departmental requirements will all be
taken into consideration before a request is approved. Requests for unpaid personal leave may be
denied or granted by APUS for any reason or no reason and are within the sole discretion of APUS.
Approvals of the immediate manager, department director and HR are required. APUS will comply with
all federal, state, and local laws when reviewing such requests.

               Requesting unpaid personal leave
 The eligible employee should submit a request in writing to his/her immediate manager.
 The employee should understand that all requests for personal leave are not granted.
 The immediate manager will review the request, taking workload scheduling and
departmental requirements into consideration and will confer with the department head
and HR. A decision will be presented to the employee as soon as feasible after receipt of the
                          written request.
 If APUS does not extend the leave, the employee must then return to work on the originally
scheduled return date or be considered to have voluntarily resigned from his or her
employment. Extensions of leave will only be considered on a case-by-case basis.
 When a personal leave ends, every reasonable effort will be made to return the employee
to the same position, if it is available, or to a similar available position for which the
employee is qualified. However, APUS does not guarantee reinstatement in all cases.

               Service Awards
Full and part-time staff are eligible to receive an anniversary award in recognition of their milestone years
of service (2 years, 3 years, 5 years, 10 years, and 15 years). For greater than 15 years, please consult HR.
