to the superstar. I could not stop wondering how this boy could
be sucked into such a scheme as this. What could make such
an innocent child become part of such an evil scheme?
It was obvious to me the boy felt a sense of duty towards
his father. He kept walking back and forth checking on his
father and asking if he was alright. When the father would
have a nervous outburst the boy would soothe him and calm
him down. The situation between the boy and his father re-
minded me of when I used to work for a juvenile attorney and
handled many cases of child abuse. It was always procedure
for the social worker to ask the child(ren), after removing them
from the abusive environment, if they wanted to return to live
with the parent. In at least 95% of all cases the child said "yes".
In most cases, the child would cover up and try to protect the
parent, knowing that the parent was wrong or had lied.
I know from firsthand experience how a manipulating par-
ent can and will use his/her child(ren), and encourage them
to participate or help execute a devious scheme. The parent
often entices and lures the child's co-participation by promis-
ing them something of great value, especially in cases where
there is a divorce or separation. Both parents try to gain the
greatest influence over the other by offering the child bigger
or better prizes. It almost appears as though they are fighting
for the child's affection. But only a parent, or someone of great
influence, can make a child override their sense of right and
wrong. After all, isn't it the parents who teach the child their
moral values?
Another technique I've seen used by parents to gain influ-
ence over their children is to place a guilt trip on the child by
telling them how much this will help them if the child cooper-
ates and goes along with the plan. How they will be able to do
this... or that...if the child plays along. Children can be quite
imaginative with the proper coaching and instructions.
Only a child could have caused Michael Jackson to let his
guard down. It appears that Michael Jackson's only error was
that he trusted in the innocence of a child. Since missing out
on so much of his own childhood and being trapped in a world
