6. The Noun : Gender





          No Nouns have numbers. They have gender too. You can divide them into four

          categories.


                                                        Noun Gender







                     Masculine                Feminine                   Common                  Neuter

                       Gender                  Gender                     Gender                 Gender


          1. Masculine Gender

               Nouns that indicate male persons and animals are said to be in the masculine

          gender.

               Read the following sentences :


               (a) The lion   is the king of the jungle.

               (b) My brother     lives in a house by the sea.

               (c) That man     has built a new house.

               (d) The king   was a brave man.


               You will notice that the coloured nouns in the above sentences are all names of
          male persons or animals.


          2. Feminine Gender

               Nouns that indicate female persons and animals are said to be in the feminine

          gender.
