5. The Noun : Number





          You know that nouns have a singular and a plural. So, we can say that, there are two

          kinds of noun numbers :

               1. Singular noun                  2. Plural noun


          Singular Noun


               The nouns which talk about a singular person or thing such as ‘party’, ‘cake’,
          ‘book’, ‘brother’, ‘friend’. They are singular nouns.


               Nouns which stand for one person, animal, place or thing are called singular
          nouns.


               Examples :      Balloon, friend, book, gift, etc.

          Plural Noun

               The nouns which talk about persons or things which are more than one in

          number such as ‘friends’, ‘balloons’, ‘stars’. They are plural nouns.

               Nouns which stand for more than one person, animal, place or thing are called

          plural nouns.

               Examples :  Trees, girls, tables, chairs, etc.

               Plural nouns are formed in different ways.

               (A)   We add  to most singular nouns to make them plural.
                    Examples :                   Singular                  Plural

                                                 friend + s       =        friends


                                                 book + s         =        books

                                                 girl + s         =        girls

                                                 gift + s         =        gifts
