2.  Common Noun : A common noun is a common name given to persons,

                animals, places or things which are of the same class, same kind or same

                group.

                Example :     The principal   distributed sweets       among the students       in the school   .

                In the above sentence, the names principal               , sweets  , students    and school     have
                been commonly used and can be given to any and every principal, sweet,

                student and school .

          3.  Collective Noun : A collective noun is the name of the group of person or things
                taken together as one.

                The word army is the name given to a collection of soldiers. So, it is a collective

                noun.

                Example :      I bought a bouquet         of flowers and a bunch          of bananas from the

                market.
                In the above sentence, the word  bouquet                stands for collection of flowers, and

                bunch of bananas stands for a collection of bananas.

          4.  Material Noun : A material noun is the name of a material of which a thing is
                made.


                Example :     Ornaments are made of gold            and silver  .
                In  the  above  sentence,  the  nouns  gold              and  silver    are  the  names  of  the

                materials of which things can be made.

          5.  Abstract Noun : An abstract noun is the name of a quality, an action or a state.
                We cannot see       or touch    it.

                Here are some examples :

                (a)  Quality : Truth, bravery, goodness, determination

                (b)  Action :love, laugh, speech, weep

                (c)  State : sickness, died, childhood, happiness

               Example :     Birbal was known for his wisdom          .

               In the above sentence, the word wisdom                is the name of a quality which we can


              neither see nor touch but can only think of. Abstract nouns are uncountable.
