Jabulani technical high school is a public institution that is situated in Soweto, South
of Johannesburg. The school is situated near residential areas and has all the
stakeholders that are needed for the functioning of the school. Learners come from
diverse socio-economic backgrounds, ethnicity, race and gender. The school has a
high rate of learner enrolment ranging from grade 8-12 namely senior phase and FET.
Learners use various modes of transportation to get to school which includes trains,
taxis, buses and some even walk to school. This is a technical school which enables
learners to choose their ideal subjects from a selection of fitting and turning, motor
mechanics, electronics, electricity and civil technology which is divided into woodwork
and construction. The school has workshops which enable the lands to actualize what
they study in theory as their get to do practical’s with fully fitted workshops. Seeing
that the school has a high enrolment, this becomes a problem when learners have to
do their practical’s as the teacher learner ratio, as stipulated by the government has
to be 1:15.
The school has English as the medium
of instruction and as the first additional
language. IsiZulu is the most
predominant language used to code
switch during progression of lesson.
The school caters for extra mural
activities such as athletics, rugby, the
school needs to provide facilities for
other sporting events and activities
that will cater for all the learners. The
school has enough infrastructure in
terms of tables and chairs but there
remains a shortage of instructional media such as smartboards, white boards and
projectors as there are only about 5 classes which are equipped with these. The school
is also faced with a problem of being under staffed which also directly relates to the
1:15 ratio that is not being balanced. For a technical school they do not offer computer
aided design programs which are a necessity for subjects such as engineering
graphics and design.
