What Is a Herniated Disc?
The bones that form the spine in your neck are cush-
ioned by spongy discs. When the discs are healthy they
act as shock absorbers for the spine and give the spine
flexibility. When a disc becomes damaged the contents
may bulge or rupture which is known as a herniated
disc. A herniated disc can also be called a slipped disc,
ruptured disc or bulging disc. A herniated disc is caused
by repetitive stress on the muscles, bones and discs of
the neck, or single traumatic incidents (heavy lifting,
prolonged positioning or whiplash.
Management Of Whiplash
Prior to attending physical therapy your doctor may
have you treat yourself at home. A few home remedies
include the following.
• Your doctor may prescribe pain medicines
and/or muscle relaxers
• Put ice on your neck for 10-15 minutes (2-3 times
per day) for the first 2-3 days and then alternate
between ice and heat and decide which one
works best for you.
• Avoid activities such as lifting and sports
• Place a pillow or tightly rolled towel under your
neck while you sleep
