you can also add keywords after that. Due to a bug in previous versions of Internet Explorer, it was
common believe that the purpose of the Alt tag was to display text in a tool tip when you held your
mouse cursor over it, this is incorrect, and the bug has been patched for current versions of IE.
Example Site:
On an image depicting a tropical bush you could set the alt attribute to: "Exotic plant maintained by
SupaGreen Exotic Landscaping". The information is true, and usable, but it also includes the 3
keywords / keyphrases, including the company name.
Let's break down the keyword density in this one alt attribute: "Exotic plants maintained by
SupaGreen Exotic Landscaping" - total words: 6 (most search engines will drop "by" since its so short
and common)
SupaGreen Exotic Landscaping: 50%
Exotic plant - density: 33.33%
Exotic Landscaping: 33.33%
SupaGreen: 16.67%
maintained:16.67%
Those are some amazing density values for some excellent keywords, and maintained isn't a bad
additional keyword either. Always make sure you strip out any words that aren't needed, this is a %'s
game, so you want as little fluff as possible. While it might be tempting to use something like:
"Beautiful exotic plant maintained by SupaGreen Exotic Landscaping" look what that would do to the
density:
SupaGreen Exotic Landscaping: 42.86% (-7.14%)
Exotic plant - density: 28.57% (-4.76%)
(Exotic Landscaping: 28.57% (-4.76%)
SupaGreen: 14.29% (-2.38%)
maintained: 14.29% (-2.38%)
One single word placed with the best of intentions can have a negative effect on your keyword
density for that item. You want to get in the practice of being as efficient as possible in every
possible way.
