In the dropdown labeled “Show inlinks:” select “Except from this domain” - this will show you links
going to this URL that are from other web pages. The more links they have, the harder it will be to
rank highly for that keyword. Repeat this process for the next 2 pages on the Google results page.
If the top 3 sites each have 100 links or less, this will be a great keyword to work on.
Repeat 6 steps until you develop a list of 5 keywords with low competition and a decent search
volume.
You now have a highly targeted and effective keyword list based on real search engine statistics,
which is exactly what we need to optimize your website and get you to the top of the search
engines!
Search engines want to provide their users with the best possible results, and that means relevance.
If you're searching for a new car, you don't want to see results for a discount furniture warehouse,
and the search engines do everything they can to prevent that from happening. One major factor in
determining relevance, is keyword density, which is the ratio of keywords to non keywords on your
site. They figure, if a webpage has 500 words, and it mentions “exotic landscaping” 15 times,
there's a pretty good chance this webpage has something to do with exotic landscaping.
Warning!
You must be VERY careful when working on keyword density, remember to only add keywords when
it's appropriate to do so: do not add lists of keywords at the end of your site, or hide text (white
text on white background, or really small fonts, like 1px), these things are considered "black hat,"
which is the "dark side of SEO", and is penalized by search engines.
