The velvety embrace of an old recliner,

               The stench of wet dog,

               A shout of children’s laughter—

Things that make a house a home.

               Learning Objectives

In this chapter, you will learn how to

1 Examine the structure of an essay.
2 Consider audience, purpose, and point of view.

3 Construct an effective thesis statement.

4 Evaluate the points of your thesis.

               5 Organize an essay.

When you are ready to begin writing an essay,

you are ready to think about its framework. Just

as a builder lays a foundation and builds a

framework before building a house, you set up the
framework of your essay through its thesis and

organization. Several ways of writing a thesis are

presented in this chapter, but at heart, a thesis is

very simple: It is the main idea of your essay.
