Organizing Your Essay
5 Organize an essay.
As you construct your thesis statement, think about the order of the
supporting paragraphs within your essay. Four possible ways of
organizing your essay are emphatic order, reverse emphatic order,
sandwich order, and chronological order. Above all, choose a method
of organization that is logical to you and to your readers.
Emphatic Order and Reverse
Emphatic Order
One logical way to present your ideas is in emphatic order, or order
of importance. Leading up to a strong idea with emphatic order gives
your essay a “snowball effect”: The essay becomes more convincing
as it goes along.
