important. He walked with the woman around the
bakery, squeezing loaves of bread and chatting. He
pointed out fat-free muffins and raisin bread and told her
how much he liked the carrot cake. It was trivial
conversation, but the point was not what he said. The
point was that his willingness to take time with her
suggested that she was a valuable customer. When she
left, she was smiling and carrying a loaf of raisin bread
with her.
Instead of taking the easy way out, Herschel accepted
responsibility for company policies, took the time to
explain, and made the woman feel like a valued
customer. I believe he won a customer for life. As for
me, I received a lesson in customer service that I will
remember when I am running my own business.
