RE ALITY CHECK
Brave New Business World
fter Mia Herrera rose, dressed, and hopped into her car, she used her
voice-activated cell phone to call several customers who had e-mailed
A her late the previous evening. Before entering her favorite coffee shop,
she reached into her pocket for her handheld computer and jotted a few
brief messages that she then e-mailed to her regional sales manager.
After enjoying a hearty breakfast and returning to her car, Mia opened
her briefcase and was soon dictating a message on her computer that was
sent wirelessly via the Internet to her office assistant. Before starting the
engine, she checked the car’s global positioning system for the most direct
but timesaving route to her new client.
At the next two stoplights, she read a few e-mails and found a favorite
Web site to check yesterday’s closing stock price for Egloff and Fox, Inc.
Her first client that morning was the E&F purchasing manager. In the
company’s parking lot, Mia quickly reviewed E&F’s background and
database files from the small wireless computer she kept in her briefcase.
Now Mia felt ready to face the business day ahead.
