During the Conference of Executives’ (COE)
Executive Council Meeting, the 16-member
representative body of sitting Goodwill CEOs
sought to add important member priorities to
a document that will inform GII’s next strategic
plan and voted to establish a task force to begin
reviewing the dues structure of the Goodwill
network.
As a consultative body to GII and the GII Board
of Directors, the COE Executive Council aims
to ensure issues important to its peers and
reflective of local needs are represented in
the three-year GII Strategic Plan, which will be
approved by the GII Board in June 2020. Shae
Johns, chair of the COE Strategic Directions Task
Force, reviewed additions and adjustments to
the 2019 Strategic Directions Input that reflected
feedback from a variety of sources, including a
general session held at the Annual Meeting of
the COE in February, a town hall meeting held by
webinar in May, and one-on-one conversations.
The additional language the taskforce suggested
be added to inform the GII Strategic Plan
includes statements on:
• Convening the Goodwill network to identify a
common purpose.
• Supporting innovation for both new business
lines and for generating expense efficiencies.
• Facilitating innovation and disruption
regarding the DGR supply chain, including
aftermarket and recycling, with attention to
environmental impact and sustainability.
• Strategically leading communities to achieve
diversity, equity and inclusion.
Johns sought a motion for the COE Executive
Council to approve the 2019 Strategic Directions
Input and forward it to the GII board's Strategic
Issues Planning Committee (SIPC) and the GII staff,
which was unanimously approved by the COE
Executive Council. The Strategic Directions Task
Force will continue its work leading up to the 2020
Annual Meeting of the COE.
The Executive Council also voted to establish a
group to reexamine the GII member dues structure,
which was last reviewed in the early 2000s. The
COE Dues Task Force studies the dues issue and
makes recommendations to the Executive Council,
which, in turn, reports back to the GII board. Any
decisions about member dues are made by vote of
the Delegate Assembly.
As chair of the COE Dues Task Force, Bruce
Phipps, president and CEO of Goodwill Industries
of the Valleys (Roanoke, VA), said the group will
study how member dues relate to the Goodwill
network, examine how other federated models
structure their member dues, and weigh how the
dues methodology and formula aligns with the
immediate and future needs of the network. This is
important, since GII and SIPC are also working on
the strategic planning process over the next year.
Other Business Before the Executive Council
In other committee reports, the chairs leading the
respective groups discussed:
• Tools to develop mentors for new CEOs.
• A review of the Certified Executive (CE)
program, which encourages continuing
education for CEOs and approval of new CEs.
• Interest in learning more about recycling fabrics
as an aftermarket business line.
