would be like a horse trying to jump across himself, or a dog trying to
chew his own teeth, or a cat trying to lick her own tongue. Anyway,
you got the idea, it is impossible.
In the end, the thing that fuels a harmful addiction (because as we've
previously seen, there are harmless addictions as well), is your very
resistance to it. Without opposition, all harmful addictions eventually
run out of ammunition.
But if I surrender to it, wouldn't I be drowning in it?
No, you won't. On the contrary, like a bubble in a bath, you'll effort-
lessly be brought back to the top.
This is only one example in which the natural world provides us with
the greatest of teachings. A fire needs wood in order to burn, a
swamp needs resistance in order to withhold. Be willing to pay more
attention to what goes on around you, and you'll discover a teacher
in the face of every tree, a dance in every wave, an inspiration in
every bird ascending to the sky.
