A Patriot’s view of the history and direction of our Country
tea for the colonies, dumping hundreds of bales of tea into
the harbor. ‘The Boston Tea Party’ was seen by the crown
as outright revolt, and punishable.
The Intolerable Acts of 1774 – These were five acts, of which
four were direct reprisals to The Boston Tea Party.
Punishment for this rebellious act was seen as necessary in
an attempt to assert England’s control of the colonies.
Shortly after the passage of these acts, Rhode Island –
followed by New York and Pennsylvania – called for a
colonial Congress. These five Intolerable Acts were:
o Boston Port Act – closed the port of Boston until the tea
tossed into the bay was paid for and respect returned to
the crown and the authority of England.
o Massachusetts Government Act – changed the charter
of Massachusetts originally granted by England. This act
created a council appointed by the crown, did not
permit unauthorized meetings of colonists, and
removed any provincial self-rule.
