militias or Minutemen – of this with the infamous ride,
‘One if by land, two if by sea’; referencing the number of
lanterns in a church tower telling how the troops were
enroute. At Lexington Green, on April 19th, was ‘the
shot heard around the world’ as England’s troops and
Minutemen exchanged gunfire – the first battle of the
forthcoming American War for Independence. The
Minutemen killed three times the better trained English
troops over their own casualties.
o May 10th 1775 – the Second Continental Congress first
met in Philadelphia (below). On May 18th it was urged
by the Congress that the colonies ready their militias.
o June 15th 1775 – General George Washington was
appointed commander of the Continental Army. June
17th the Battle of Bunker Hill and Breed’s Hill were
fought, driving the English troops to retreat at a loss of
over one thousand casualties.
o August 23rd 1775 – England’s king proclaimed the
colonies to have “proceeded to open and avowed
rebellion.”
o October 13th 1775 – the Continental Congress
authorized acquiring naval ships.
After expelling all governing persons from the colonies, by 1774
each of the thirteen colonies formed a governing body, or some
referred to as a provincial Congress. British troops were sent to
enforce rule, and occupy, the colonies. Many of the actions of these
armies would be addressed in the Bill of Rights – including the Right
