P. 9
Stage 1: The Excretion Phase
attempt to forcefully excrete this irritant out of the
body before it can reach the lungs and irritate or
damage them. If the irritant in the air persists, the
mucous membranes inside your nose make extra
fluid (mucous). This is designed to trap the irritant
before it can reach and damage your lungs. This is
what gives rise to a runny nose or sinus congestion.
It should be noted that these excretion
strategies are healthy responses. They help protect
the body and keep noxious substances out. We
never want to stop these excretion strategies. The
effective medical strategy for treating such
problems is to help the body efficiently remove the
noxious substance while easing the symptoms and
discomfort of the patient. Because this is the first
stage in a medical problem and is usually an acute
(short lived) problem, treatment for these types of
medical problems only takes a week or two and the
patient is feeling significantly better. If properly
treated, the problem stops here. If not, it goes to
the reaction phase.
