Tabulating data
In decision making we must provide management with the best information possible
from the data we have available.
Tabulating data is a good technique which helps us present raw data in a way which
makes it easier to understand and therefore more useful for decision making.
There are a few techniques for tabulating data.
2.1 Tallying
Tallying is one way of converting raw data into a more concise format to make it
easier to use.
Tallying involves setting up the range of outcomes in a list and putting a notch
against each number each time it appears in the data. These notches are normally
shown in groups of five making it each to count the totals at the end.
So, 2 is shown as II, four is shown as IIII and five is shown as IIII.
Tallying is most useful when you have a small number of outcomes such as:
7 6 8 9 5 6 7 12 9 4 5 6
In this case, the outcomes range from 4 to 12.
