1.2 The process of performance appraisal
Organisations follow four main steps when assessing performance of employees:
At the start of the period, the manager and
Set targets employee should agree on which goals and targets
the employee is going to work towards.
During the period, the manager should monitor
Monitor employee performance and provide regular
feedback.
At the end of the period, the manager and
employees will usually have a formal appraisal
Review where they discuss the employee’s performance
and investigate how successful the employee has
been at meeting the pre-agreed targets.
The manager and employee then agree on new

targets that will be set for the coming period.
