Information and knowledge management

3.3 Common systems used to aid knowledge management

               Appropriate systems include:

 networks – such as LANs and WANs

 groupware – which allows groups to collaborate on projects

 intranets – which provide a central store of information that can be accessed
                     by employees

 extranets – these are intranets which are expanded to allow access to selected
                     external parties (such as suppliers).

3.4 The Learning Organisation - Senge

There are five key disciplines required for an organisation to ensure successful
creation, acquisition and transferring of knowledge:

 systems thinking – see the organisation as a whole

 personal learning and growth – individual training and development

 mental models – challenge ingrained assumptions

 shared vision – which does not undermine learning

 team learning – train teams to learn so that group dynamics do not impede
                     learning
