The body also starts to detox as the fast continues, which can lead to bad
breath without eating for a while. Make sure you have your mints handy .
Some people absolutely hate fasting, and feel that it is akin to starving your
body to death. Others with medical conditions like hypoglycaemia, low
blood pressure and anaemia should not attempt fasting.
Also, if you feel that you are starving yourself, then it may weaken your
resolve to resist foods that are instantly accessible. For example, if you’re
fasting and you drive past the wafting smell of KFC, you may decide, in a
moment of rebellion, to toss the fast and pig out on a bucket of oily, deep-
fried chicken. Your lips will love you, your hips will hate you.
Our take on the matter
We say that you should exercise great caution before you commit to a
fasting diet, and you should consult your doctor if your health is not 100%.
Drinking water only while you fast can seem almost unpalatable. Even
though you know you need and want food, and that water will help to keep
the hunger pangs at bay, it can be wholly unappetising, especially if you’re
not a fan of water, and in some cases, it can even make you a little nauseous.
With sustained fasting, weight loss can be rapid. However, if you lost it
quickly, you can also gain it back quickly – especially if you haven’t made
lifestyle changes, or had a long-term psychological shift in your thinking
around food. Switching from “eating to live” instead of “living to eat” can be
daunting, and a psychological rebellion may kick in.
One of the experts in our team fasted in the mornings until he became really
hungry, and then broke the fast with a high-protein low-carb lunch (usually at
around 2pm). Because the body was starved of carbs, he in effect “tricked”
