Sungdo(escaped all desires and obsession), 2019, Gilt Bronze, 15.7”x7.8”x11.4”
JAE YUN LEE
Jae Yun Lee creates statues of Buddha, combining traditional and modern interpretations, with
a young artist’s perspective. This Buddha statue, named ‘Sungdo Statue’, symbolizes the state of
impassivity of Buddha, who is sitting with a benevolent smile, and a large hole in his upper body.
He is free from all desires and obsessions after his intense practice of asceticism. “I wondered what
Buddha had thought before he achieved final enlightenment. I thought that the state of impassivity is the
best way to practice. And I created it with the thought that Buddha at the time may have also practiced
penance with that kind of mindset,” says the sculptor.
