The older man moved into her path and continued despite Teri's deadly glare
directed at him, "Did a man hurt you? I could be your exception, help you go
straight again."
Teri didn't even try to hold back her snort, she subconsciously moved her
hand into her pocket and fidgeted with a small object, "That is completely
unnecessary, now please get out of my way."
The man opened his mouth to continue but he never got the chance. Renae,
who had quickly chosen drinks for both of them, had found Teri and interjected
before he could spew more ignorance around.
"Get a clue, loser. My girlfriend doesn't want to talk to you, I don't know
why anyone would. So, if you'll excuse us we're going to go have a better and
happier life than your ignorant self. Good day."
Renae proceeded to grab Teri's hand that wasn't holding the basket full of
groceries and pull her out of the aisle before the man could collect himself enough
to respond.
As the two girls walked quickly to the shelves of candy, Renae was visibly
fuming. Teri knew the prejudice of girls "turning" gay after a man hurt them was a
sore spot for Renae. Teri shot her a soft smile to say thank you for driving the man
away. Renae's stony veneer melted away slightly and a half-hearted smile traced
her lips.
Armed with a comical amount of candy for only two people, Renae and Teri
moved to the checkout. They smiled knowingly at each other as the cashier
evaluated their purchases. They thanked the employee and moved back into the
cold outside world.
Teri noticed the newly opened café down the road and decided to try to
cheer her girlfriend up some more.
