The Makings of a Memorable Night
“Babe, there’s no way in hell I am going outside.”
Teri stood in front of her girlfriend, looking less like her girlfriend and more
like a puffy, bright orange marshmallow. Her caramel coloured skin contrasted
with her coat and Teri was both frustrated and confused by the fact that Renae
actually looked good in a winter coat. Renae was holding out a snow suit, a toque,
mittens and a scarf to Teri but she was skeptical about the whole 'walk in the
middle of a Canadian winter' idea.
“C’mon Ter. We need snacks for our movie marathon and this apartment has
nothing."
Teri smiled despite herself, it was Teri’s fault there was no food due to her
boycott against the snow piling up outside about a week ago, but Renae withheld
placing the blame.
“It’s freezing,” Teri whined.
Renae frowned, “But listen, do you want food?”
Teri sighed and begrudgingly took the grey coat from Renae’s hands.
“We’re gonna get twizzlers though, right?”
Renae was jumping up and down, the dark brown curls poking out from the
bottom of her hat bouncing along with her, “Anything you want!”
Teri pulled her toque on and her face broke into a grin again, too fond of her
girlfriend to hold it back as Renae moved to open the door. Cold air rushed around
Teri but she bit back her complaints as Renae rushed into the outside world.
The store was perhaps a 20-minute walk away in good conditions but it had
snowed last night (Teri could guess about 20 cm), and the town had not yet plowed
the streets. Teri asked herself why they couldn't take her car but seeing Renae's
smile as their cheeks slowly turned pink and their toes numb was worth it. Renae
