14.5  Reported  Speech:  Modals



                     Students:  *  We'll  be  late  for  class.”   They  mentioned  (that)  they  would  be  late  for  class.
                     Lisa:  “We  can't  leave  early.”   She  said  (that)  they  couldn't  leave  early.

                      1.  These  modals  often  change  as  follows  in
                        reported  speech.
                        a.  will—>  would                       a.  Joe:  “I'll  see  you  later.”
                                                                   Joe  said  he  would  see  us  later.
                        b.  can—>  could                        b.  Lucy:  “I  can’t  see.”
                                                                   Lucy  said  she  couldn't  see.
                        c.  must—>  had  to                     c.  Jen:  “You  must  leave  by  noon.”
                                                                   Jen  said  that  we  had  to  leave  by  noon.
                        d.  may—>  might                        d.  Tim:  “|  may  come  later.”
                                                                   Tim  said  that  he  might  come  later.

                      2.The  modals  should,  ought  to,  could,  and       Oscar:  “You  should  be  a  chef.”
                       might  do  not  change  in  reported  speech.  |  Oscar  told  Jane  that  she  should  be  a  chef.





                     6   Complete  the  conversations.  Use  an  appropriate  modal  in  each  sentence.  Sometimes  more
                         than  one  answer  is  possible.

                         1.  A:  We  should  go  to  the  party  on  Saturday  after  dinner.

                            B :  [thought  you  said  we _   should go        early.  You  said  they  would  have  dinner.

                         2.  A:  I  may  bake  a  loaf  of  bread  for  the  party.

                            B :  You  didn’t  tell  me  you                      a  loaf  of  bread!  I  love  your  bread.


                         3.  A :  I'll  bring  some  beverages,  too.

                            B :  OK,  but  yesterday  you  said  you                     a  dessert.

                         4.  A :  We  can’t  drive  there.  The  highways  will  be  busy.

                            B :  Really?  Yesterday  you  said  that  we                   there  easily,  with  no  traffic.

                         5.  A :  We  may  need  to  leave  early  to  get  to  the  party  on  time.

                            B :  Did  you  say  that  we      to  leave  early?  I’m  not  sure  I  can  leave
                              before  4:00.


                         6.  A :  The  party  will  be  fun.
                            B :  |  thought  you  said  the  party  SSS  boring  and  that  you  didn’t  want  to  go.


                         7.  A :  We  can  go  swimming  at  the  party.

                            B:  Swimming?  You  never  told  me  we  SSCS.  swim  ning.  Iss  there  a  pool?

                         8.  A:  Alex  may  bring  his  drums.

                            B:  I  don’t  think  so.  Last  night  Alex  mentioned  that  he   SSCS       shi:  gti.
