                    14.4  Reported  Speech:  Statements



                     Troy:  “I'm  not  cooking.”   Troy  told  me  (that)  he  wasn't  cooking.
                                                                   Noun  Clause

                     Carla:  “It’s  going  to  rain.”   Carla  said  (that)  it  was  going  to  rain.
                                                                   Noun  Clause


                       1.  In  reported  speech,*  you  report  what   Anna:  “|  have  to  leave  the  party.”
                         someone  said  using  a  reporting  verb**  +   Anna  said  that  she  had  to  leave  the  party.
                         a  noun  clause.  No  quotation  marks  (°  ”)  or   Anna  said  she  had  to  leave  the  party.
                         commas  are  used.  That  can  be  omitted.

                       2.  In  reported  speech,  pronouns  must  be   Jim:  “I  need  to  rest  because  my  back  hurts.”
                         changed  to  keep  the  speaker's  original   Jim  said  he  needed  to  rest  because  his  back  hurt.
                         meaning.

                       3.  If  the  reporting  verb  is  in  the  past  (said,  fold),
                         the  verb  form  in  the  noun  clause  usually
                         changes.***
                         a.  Simple  present  changes  to  simple  past.   a.  Sam:  “|  don’t  want  to  go.”
                                                                          Sam  said  that  he  didn’t  want  to  go.
                         b.  Present  progressive  changes  to  past   b.  Mary:  “I'm  taking  cooking  lessons.”
                           progressive.                                   Mary  said  she  was  taking  cooking  lessons.
                         c.  Present  perfect  and  simple  past  both   c.  Tod:  “I've  made  a  cake.”  /  “|  made  a  cake.”
                            change  to  past  perfect.                   Tod  said  he  had  made  a  cake.


                       4.  It  is  not  necessary  to  change  the  verb  form  in
                         the  noun  clause  from  present  to  past  when  it
                         is  about:
                         a.  a  general  truth                         a.  |  told  him  that  |  love  to  cook.
                         b.  something  still  true                    b.  Mary  said  Jack  is  in  the  kitchen.


                       *Reported  speech  is  sometimes  called  indirect  speech.

                         3.  Ray:  “We  were  studying  with  one  of  the  finest  baking  instructors.”

                            Ray:  He  said  that  they  are  studying  /  had  been  studying  with  one  of  the  finest  baking
