Bioblitz
We often don’t notice the biodiversity—the variety of plants and animals—right in our
own backyards. Participating in a bioblitz can change that. A bioblitz lasts 24 hours. During
that time, both scientists and non-scientists look around in one area carefully. They try to
locate and identify as many different species of living things as possible. Hundreds of people
look for species of plants, mammals, fish, birds, and insects. Large groups can cover a lot
of ground. Although they usually find known species, sometimes new ones are discovered.
Everyone gets very tired and dirty, but the work can be fun, and it’s a great learning
experience. In fact, most people want to do it again.
If you'd like to participate in a bioblitz, here are some important reminders:
e You have to register by a certain date in order to participate, so check the schedule.
e No experience is necessary.
e Weather conditions may change during the day, so wear layers of clothing.
e You will need sunglasses, sunscreen, and a hat.
e The event will take place rain or shine.
