2 BEFORE YOU WRITE.
A Work with a partner. Brainstorm more advantages and disadvantages of both traditional
college classes and online classes. List your ideas in your notebook.
B Make a chart like the ones in exercise 1C. Decide which has more benefits: traditional
classes or online classes.
3 WRITE to convince your reader that either traditional college classes or online classes
are better. Write three or four paragraphs. Use your chart from exercise 2B and the text in
exercise 1A to help you.
WRITING FOCUS Using Semicolons
Writers use semicolons when they want to connect two sentences that have closely
related ideas. They are commonly used when the second sentence begins with a
transition word. See the examples below:
College tuition rates have been increasing for many years; as a result, many
people are not able to afford a traditional college education.
It is also true that you don’t meet with your classmates face to face; however, you
can interact with them online.
Remember to put a comma after a transition word.
4 SELF ASSESS. Read your essay. Underline the transition words and prepositonal phrases
that indicate contrast, cause, effect or result, or addition. Then use the checklist to assess
your work.
| J used transition words indicating contrast, result, and addition correctly. [15.1-15.3]
| I used prepositional phrases indicating cause and contrast correctly. [15.4-15.6]
| I used semicolons correctly. [WRITING FOCUS]
