Competency is being able to do productive work using your knowledge, skills, and abilities.
o A job description is a group of competencies you need to do a specific job.

                       o Riding a bicycle is a competency.

Why do these matter? Because employers look at you to see what knowledge, skills, and
abilities you can bring to a job.
                   • Do you have the physical ability to do the job?

                   • Do you have the background knowledge and skills to do the job well?
                   • Can you learn new things and problem solve in this job?

 Ask students to list the tools and technology used by:
                          o fast food workers
                                  For Evaluation Only
                          o a dentist
                          o a store clerk
 Ask for a volunteer to tell about the degree or training they are receiving right now, and
as a class, list the knowledge, skills, abilities, tools and technologies they are learning.
