Page 13 - To know things we have to have the world inside us
P. 13
“I wanted to know what it was so badly…”
“This is what is feels like inside the tube.
I see this tube at work all the time,
and I’ve never felt inside it. I assumed I knew it.
I thought it was ‘just bamboo’.
But I kept going.
Now I’m glad I did.”
“We consciously need to look for something that
surprises us to push back our predictions.”
The mind is disrupted. It wants to see - to see what it already thinks it knows. - just bamboo. The desire is
intense. But with persistence, fingers keep finding the unfamiliar. It’s an experience of ostranenyi - ‘making things
that seem familiar strange again’. (Bruner, 2002). The actual experience brings theory to life. The
teacher~researchers experience the strong desire to offer the answer - a label - a name.
