Federal Cybersecurity Data Breach and Government Security Compromise at DOE and NSA
This should be revisited, but I am sure the agency is scrambling for money over this
incident as the IG reported it has already cost taxpayers millions of dollars.
Finally, the DOE IG’s office is known to me to be cautious and conservative
about what they report. If their recent report lists over 104,000 people involved
then I predict that the final numbers, once known, will be far greater. We may not
know for some time because processing forensic data and chasing cyber criminals
around the globe takes time. Often these cases lead through multiple countries and
sometimes the perpetrator is never discovered. Hopefully that won’t happen in this
case; because that would mean all that sensitive data is lost forever. Getting back to
Edward Snowden, some people think he is a bad guy for releasing secret NSA data
about our phone and internet activities - others think that he is a hero. Either way, it
is pretty clear that the Government is almost always its own worst enemy.
