• Humans are basically good, and so want to make the world a better place;
• Humans want to grow and improve themselves.
Two humanist theorists are Abraham Maslow (1908-1970) and Carl Rogers (1902-
1987). Psychologist Maslow was concerned with self-actualisation – “a state of
fulfillment in which a person is achieving at his or her highest level of capability”
(Lumen, n.d.). He is well known for his ‘hierarchy of needs’, pictured below.

In order to reach the highest level of self-actualisation, all the layers of the pyramid
needs to be fulfilled or attained (Lumen, n.d.). Put simply, if you are hungry and
homeless, then it will be very hard to reach a level of self-actualisation.
