5. The Shiloh Warning
One of the most conclusive warnings of divinejudg-
ment is revealed in the seventh chapter of Jeremiih.
Through this great prophet; God spoke these words
to all generations: ". . . go now to my place which
was in Shiloh where I set my name at 4irst, and
see what I did to it for the wickedness of my people
Israel" (Jeremiah 7:12).
God is saying to us, as he said to Israel. go
back to Shiloh and learn from that example. You will
see what I do to a nation and a people who forsake me.
Shiloh is your warning. It was once my house, with my
blessing on it. The fall of Eli's house is also the fall of
Israel, and the fall of all others who refuse the warnings.
"The lofty looks of man shall he humbled, and the hauc'ht-
mess of men shall be bowed down, and the Lord alone
shall be exalted in that day" (Isaiah 2:11 KJV)
Eli and the leaders of Israel were old, weary, and
backsldden. Their Sons gave themselves over to the
devil. "They knew not the Lord . . . their sins were
very great . . . anything their soul desired they took
they abhorred the service of God.. . . they lay
with the women that assembled at the door of the taber-
nacle . . . they made the Lord's people to transgress
they hearkened not to the voice of their fa-
thers. . .
Parents refused to restrain their delinquent sons and
daughters. Every man became a law unto himself. and
everybody was busy getting "fat with the chiefest of all
the offerings" (1 Samuel 2:29 KJv).
And the people shall be oppressed, every one by
another, and every one by his neighbour: the child
shall behave himself proudly against the ancient,
and the base against the honourable.
(Isaiah 3:5 KJV)
