IDF 'Fitness Badge' ("Ot HaKosher") silver class, circa. 1950's; not maker-marked (probably Shmuel Kretchmer); size: 16mm; weight: 2.3g. Solid-backed w/safety-
pin. Obv: soldier in 1950's-era uniform 'charging' forward w/bayonetted rifle. Known formally as the 'Badge of Physical Fitness', it was awarded in two classes - 'silver', for
exceptional performance, and 'bronze' for average performance - in framework of physical fitness test performed during basic training; a similar test took place again later
for those in squad-leader courses and those in officer courses. The test included running and an obstacle course in full kit. Worn on the right pocket-flap of the tunic.

Depicts sword (base transformed into olive branch) breaking ring of barbed wire & chain enclosing a Star of David, set against [blue & white] stripes of the Israeli/pre-State
flag. May date to 1954, when an official celebration of 10 years to the founding of the Jewish Brigade took place and a commemorative book with this emblem on the
cover, incl. opening presentation by the Prime Minister (Moshe Sharett), was published. Approx. 32,000 Palestinian Jews served in the British forces during the war.
